Nihar Shah is Deputy Leader of the International Energy Studies Group and leads LBNL's research on alternate refrigerants and energy efficiency for Heating, Ventilation, Airconditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC&R) equipment and product-specific techno-economic analysis efforts on the costs of energy efficiency of equipment including analyses on Room ACs, multi-split ACs, Refrigerators, Ceiling Fans, TVs and PC Monitors. His other research interests include demand response, advanced manufacturing and water policy and technology. 

Nihar's work has been featured in various media including the New York Times, Washington Post, Economist, Forbes Magazine, NPR and numerous other publications. He regularly advises multilateral institutions, governments, industry, and regulators on energy policies and programs.  

Prior to joining LBNL, Nihar worked at the California Public Utilities Commission. He received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and is a licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer in California.
